Periodontal diseases
Periodontal diseases are diseases of the gum tissues that support your teeth. Periodontal diseases are completely preventable with proper oral care and regular professional cleanings and check ups. Regular professional cleanings and checkups are important because periodontal diseases increase in severity without treatment. There are two major stages of these diseases: gingivitis and periodontitis.
Gingivitis is mild and reversible, as it only affects the gums. If your dentist notices you have gingivitis, he/she can create a treatment plan to reverse the effects and restore your mouth to health.
However if gingivitis progresses to periodontitis, the tissue may be damaged to the point that some of your teeth may have to be extracted.
